Understanding Multi-Agent Framework

Multi-Agent Framework (MAF) is a structured approach to AI system development that organises AI capabilities as a coordinated network of specialised agents, each with a defined role, clear input/output contracts, and explicit protocols for handing work between agents. It is the methodology Uppercase M uses for all AI platform development, and it is the antidote to "vibe coding" — the informal, intuition-driven AI development that produces systems that work in demos but fail in production.

Why Agents?

A single large language model cannot reliably perform complex, multi-step tasks that require specialised reasoning, domain knowledge, and quality gates at each stage. Decomposing complex tasks into a network of specialised agents — each optimised for a narrow responsibility — produces dramatically more reliable outcomes than asking a single model to do everything.

The MAF Architecture

Every MAF implementation has four layers: Orchestration (the coordinator that receives tasks and routes work to specialist agents), Specialists (domain-specific agents with focused capabilities and explicit output formats), Quality Gates (agents that verify outputs before they proceed to the next stage), and Memory (persistent context that allows the system to maintain coherence across multi-step tasks).

Constitution-Driven Development

The most important structural element of MAF is the Constitution — a document that defines each agent's purpose, constraints, capabilities, and the principles it must follow. Constitutions are not prompts. They are architectural documents that specify agent behaviour in terms precise enough to be tested, audited, and evolved. Constitution-driven development is what separates professional AI engineering from experimentation.

MAF is not a product — it is a methodology. It can be implemented on any LLM infrastructure, with any orchestration framework, in any programming language. What makes it consistent across implementations is the discipline of the constitution, the clarity of agent interfaces, and the rigour of quality gates. This is the structured foundation on which Uppercase M builds every AI platform it delivers.
